The President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades received today, at the Presidential Palace, the annual report of the Office of the Commissioner for Gender Equality Ms Josephine Antoniou for 2020.
Delivering the report, Ms. Antoniou said it includes "the activities, actions and programmes of the Office which always aim to eliminate discrimination and inequalities and promote equality.
In conditions of a global health crisis, I must assure you that both my Office and the other Equality Authorities have always had as their priority the promotion of women's rights and the expansion of women's rights, which is the basic principle of the Republic of Cyprus."
Receiving the report, the President of the Republic congratulated Ms. Antoniou for the work of her Office and the work of the other Equality Authorities, which is carried out "always within the framework of the state's efforts through legislative regulations and the implementation of the Equality Principles."

[P I WOULD LIKE TO BELIEVE THAT DAY BY DAY OR YEAR BY YEAR PERCEPTIONS ARE BEGINNING TO DIVERSIFY, THAT THE ROLE OF WOMEN IS CERTAINLY BEING RECOGNISED.[/P]And it is with great satisfaction that I can say that in today's Cabinet for the first time there are five women.
I hope that the next ones to follow me will make even greater progress, and at the same time a similar phenomenon will be observed in the House of Representatives.
Women not only have a position, but also opinions, they have a constitution often in excess of that which men were thought to possess. Therefore, the effort of the State is to achieve the goal: equality. And this can be achieved by respecting each other and especially if women's organisations recognise the role they can play.
I have said it before, I want to say it now. The majority of voters are women, it is up to them if the political forces choose candidates for election to the various Bodies that are elected, to give a vote of confidence to the ladies who represent each political party, so that the participation rate in Parliament will also increase. Of course, it is not only Parliament, but also a host of other places. More generally, the presence of women in the various managerial positions in the Public Service and in the private sector is now beginning to show that women are just as consistent, much more organised and creative than men have hitherto been thought to be."
