Speaking at the ceremony, the President of the Republic said that "exercising the powers granted to me by the Constitution, I proceed today with the appointment of Mr. Dimitrios Demetriou. Dimitris Demetriou, to the position of Deputy Chief of Police.

Considering the high mission of the Police Force, which is absolutely interwoven with the maintenance of law and order in society, the decision to appoint Mr. Demetriou was of decisive importance for the appointment of Mr. Demetriou. In this context, I am absolutely sure that, acting with the same conscientiousness and impartiality that has characterized him so far, he will fully respond to the responsible position entrusted to him by the State.

In this context, I am absolutely sure that, acting with the same conscientiousness and impartiality that has characterized him so far, he will fully respond to the responsible position entrusted to him by the State.

I believe I would be remiss if I did not express my sincere thanks to the outgoing Deputy Chief, Mr Christos Mavris, who, after a long and fruitful service, is retiring from the Corps. I wish him all the best, full of health in his new career.

Given the ongoing modernization plan of the Cyprus Police, according to the government program, I look forward to your active assistance, Mr. Demetriou, in this effort.

An effort which focuses on.

- Strengthening relations of trust with society.

It is worth noting that in the context of the innovative approaches and radical reforms adopted, the upgrading of the structures of the Police was achieved for the first time since 1960, as well as the promotion of the functional and operational competence of the Police and its members.

This does not mean that the weaknesses that are occasionally recorded have been eliminated. Weaknesses that are due, unfortunately, to the few who either negligently or fraudulently commit acts of corruption, thus tarnishing the image of the Police Force or underestimating the significant progress and successes recorded daily in the fight against serious and organised crime. That is why I believe that there are no other options than. Zero tolerance to those who insult the Police Force by their acts or omissions,

B. Strict adherence to the rules of meritocracy, promotion of the competent and deserving who enhance the prestige of the Force, regardless of any political expediency.

What I want to assure you of is that the unchanging objective remains the complete transformation of the Police into a modern, flexible and efficient organization.

Mr Demetriou, it is this effort that you are called upon to assist by continuing your contribution, working towards the fulfilment of the mission and the high role of the Force, with absolute consistency and always in close cooperation with the Chief Minister, the Force Commander and all the other agencies involved.

To this end, the non-negotiable guiding principle of your actions and decisions should be the benefit of the Service and the defence of citizens and their rights.

In addition to the highest honour, your appointment carries with it the highest responsibility.

I am absolutely certain that in full cooperation with the Political Head of the Force, the Leadership and staff of the Police and with respect to the civil society, you will be worthy and justify the choice recorded today by the State through this act."

For his part, the new Deputy Chief of Police said, among other things, that he assumes his new duties with a sense of profound responsibility, being fully aware of the multi-level and multidimensional challenges in matters relating to public order, security and policing.

He added that he will do his utmost to live up to the expectations of the President of the Republic and the demands of the citizens.

He also said that "the Cyprus Police has to perform work that goes beyond the narrow borders of our homeland, which are also limited due to the illegal Turkish occupation", having to deal with issues such as terrorism, international economic and organised crime, illegal immigration, which have a multiplier effect on the responsibilities of the Police".

Finally, he said that the Police is on the path of complete reorganization and modernization in the framework of which a modern model of policing will be designed.
