"We will do everything possible to liberate the homeland", President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said today, stressing that we should honour our heroes through our attitudes and approaches.

In his remarks after the Trisagion at the Prisoner's Memorial and the laying of a wreath at the graves of the heroes on today's April 1 anniversary, the President of the Republic said: "We are proud of the purest struggle of Cypriot Hellenism.

And if there is something I am particularly happy about this year, it is that for the first time I see so many people at this modest ceremony. It is the first time I see so many children. I would like to take this opportunity to mention that we have an obligation, we have a duty to talk to our children about the EOKA struggle. About the purest struggle of Cypriot Hellenism.

We must know our history, we must remember. In no way whatsoever does this mean that it works against a possible resolution of the Cyprus problem. Because the resolution of the Cyprus problem passes through respect for everyone's history and not through self-abolition.

And I am particularly happy, I want to repeat, that today for the first time I see so many people, so many young people, young women and children. It is something that satisfies me.

Beyond that, it is not enough just to be proud. We must show this pride, but we must also show our debt to all those who have given their lives so that we can exist. For there would be no Republic of Cyprus, the most important thing we have to this day, if it were not for the fighters of the national liberation struggle. We should show that we honour them through our daily life, through the daily way we behave, the way we approach issues, and especially with regard to our occupied homeland. This year marks their fiftieth anniversary. We will do everything possible to liberate it."

"Only then will we honor [THEM] as befits their memory," President Christodoulides said."

Earlier today, the President of the Republic attended the April 1 praise service at the Apostle Barnabas Cathedral in the Archdiocese.
