The UN Secretary General is on the same line as our side regarding the appointment of an envoy for the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, who had a meeting with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres today, 22 September, at noon (New York time) at the Office of the Secretary General.
In a statement to journalists after his meeting with the UN Secretary General in New York, President Christodoulides said that "I express my pleasure because we are exactly on the same line with the UN Secretary General, both on the issue of the appointment of a personality, but also on the need to hold a trilateral meeting.
And I am pleased that the Secretary General has informed me of his intentions. Let me say, unfortunately, that so far there is no result, there is no response from the other side. There is also tomorrow.
As you know, (the Secretary-General) will see the Foreign Minister of Turkey - there was no meeting with the Turkish President - he will also see the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community after all the contacts in the framework of the General Assembly are completed, and I expressed once again that we are here, even tomorrow, to hold such a meeting, which will also lead to the announcement of the appointment of a person who will explore the prospects for the resumption of talks.
I would like to note something else that the Secretary-General conveyed to me, of particular importance for the efforts we are making, the fact that EU member states during their meeting with the UN Secretary General, strong EU member states, raised the Cyprus issue, the need for a resumption of talks, which is directly linked to possible positive developments regarding Euro-Turkish issues. So, here we are up to this moment and we are waiting to see."
Asked whether the UN Secretary General will issue an invitation for a trilateral meeting, the President of the Republic said that "he has already issued such an invitation and the answer was negative, and tomorrow there will be the meeting I told you about, will be preceded by the meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister, unfortunately the meeting with the Turkish President did not take place, and I mentioned that tomorrow, we are ready at any time, when the Secretary General himself decides to attend such a meeting."
In response to a reporter's remark that he said that on the issue of appointing an envoy he is in the same line with the UN Secretary General, the President said "yes, because the Secretary General also sees the need to appoint such a person, moreover, this is what the Security Council itself calls for. But he, too, as he told me, sees the need for the appointment of such a personality."
Asked if the UN Secretary General will make any move in this direction, the President of the Republic said that "he has the meetings tomorrow that I mentioned to you. His efforts are also continuing and I think it is important that it is not only our position, it is also the position of the UN Secretary General, both in terms of a joint trilateral meeting, in terms of the appointment of a personality, but the same from strong EU member states that raised the Cyprus issue, as he mentioned to me, during the meeting they had this week. So, we can expect to see tomorrow and we will be here."
