The President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, in his statements to journalists today, after the end of the service for the feast of St. Maron at the Cathedral of Panagia Chariton, asked whether we are changing the policy from the sanctions we sought to confidence-building measures, he said that "the sanctions remain in the technical committee which will work on them further, but at the same time and as an indication of a positive step in the effort that we are making to create that appropriate and positive climate, is the implementation on the one hand of the MEAs that we are proposing, but of course, on the other hand, for Turkey to stop acting in the illegal way that it is acting either in terms of violating the status of Famagusta, the EEZ of Cyprus, but also the recent events that demonstrate, unfortunately, a persistence in intransigence, but also in the creation of new fait accompli."
Asked to comment on Mr. Tatar's rejection of the President's proposal on the issue of Famagusta in particular and asked if there are any thoughts on how the Government can advance the issue, the President said that "we have already communicated to the UN Secretary General our intention and proposals, he has forwarded them, the recommendation to the American Government by the Secretary of State in the recent meeting they had in America, I have forwarded the proposal to Mr. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and at the same time the Foreign Minister has forwarded it to the EU High Representative, Mr. Josep Borel. I have also informed Mr John Kerry in his capacity as envoy of the President of the United States and former Secretary of State, and at the same time next week I will have a meeting with the French President - unfortunately, due to the heavy schedule, it was not possible to hold the meeting the day before yesterday. Of course, I will also seek a meeting with the German Chancellor."
Asked if a new letter was sent to the UN Secretary General, the President said that "the proposal was forwarded through the UN, which, I recall, was also submitted on December 31, 2020."
