On March 11, the President of the Republic will meet with the UN Secretary General's personal envoy for the Cyprus problem, María Ángela Holguín, as he said today.

In his remarks to journalists, coming to a debate event entitled "Young people ask", and to a comment by a journalist that there are whispers that the Presidency is promoting certain candidates for the local government elections, President Christodoulides said: "The Presidency is not involved either for the election of local government members or for the election of members of the European Parliament."

We are here and will do so to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. Nothing else. We are not involved in any case."

Asked to respond to criticisms that social groups such as pensioners were left out of the government's support measures, the President said: "Let me remind you that this was the second package of measures we have announced, preceded by a package of 196 million euros. This Government very purposefully came at this moment to announce a new package. We are examining the facts, always in the context of fiscal responsibility, in order to respond to the needs of society, which we know very well."

Asked whether the recommendation of the Cyprus Group is still valid, the President of the Republic said: "Of course it is valid, of course I know who will participate in that group and when that group needs to be convened I will do so."

Right now my focus is on the fact that our meeting with Ms. Holguín on March 11 has already been concluded. March 11 will be in Cyprus and everything will be done as it should be. We have one single objective and that is to resume the talks from where they were interrupted in Crans-Montana."
