There should be immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza, President Nicos Christodoulides said tonight.

Speaking to reporters in Deryneia, the President of the Republic, asked about the meeting he had earlier today with the UN Coordinator for Gaza, said that "we are working together to implement the maritime humanitarian corridor from Cyprus to Gaza. It is not the only option, there are other options, but taking into account the serious humanitarian needs, humanitarian assistance should be provided immediately.

We welcome the fact that (the Coordinator) was in Cyprus today, she will go to Israel, she will subsequently brief the Secretary General and we hope that the conditions will soon be in place to allow the maritime humanitarian corridor to function properly."

In response to a journalist's remark that the needs of the population in Gaza are increasing, the President said "precisely and there should not be any political incentives that make it difficult to implement such options. The criterion that should judge any options that exist, such as this Cypriot proposal, is the needs of the people in Gaza, which are clearly increasing day by day."

To another question, he said that "we are in cooperation both with Britain and with the country where the Special Representative of the Secretary-General comes from and with the Netherlands, the EU in general and all the states that can contribute in this direction."

Asked about his meeting with the DIKO Secretariat today, the President said that "we had a meeting with the DIKO Secretariat, within the framework of contacts, one year after and after the first Sunday of the elections, we also exchanged views on the implementation of the government programme, on issues of cooperation and others."

Asked if DIKO has expressed dissatisfaction with the government programme, the President said that "I cannot speak on behalf of DIKO. All decisions concern me, so any responsibility or dissatisfaction is to my person, as is the responsibility for any choice."
