A special team from abroad is coming to Cyprus to support the Cypriot authorities in their investigations regarding issues that have recently seen the light of day, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said today.

In his statements to journalists at the Mediterranean Symposium on the role of women in the economy held at the Conference Centre, the President of the Republic, when asked to comment on the reference in his speech at the Symposium that within 2024 the participation of women in the Government will be in the order of 50% and asked if this is how he is announcing a reshuffle, said: "We are proud that 44% of the appointments made upon taking office are women.

Let me remind you that during the election campaign I had talked about 50-50 and this target, what we announced, will be implemented.

The percentage in Cyprus is one of the highest not only in Europe but in the world in general and it is something that we will strengthen. In my speech I mentioned that within 2024 this rate will increase."

Asked to comment on British media reports that weapons are being transferred from the British bases in Cyprus to Israel, the President said: "There is no such information. Our country cannot be used as a base for military operations.

Our country, through its actions, shows the humanitarian character of our approaches. This effort that we are making for the humanitarian corridor, as well as the great effort to evacuate the population from the area, was also used by the British and the Americans. We have a very, very good cooperation."

Asked if there is any news in relation to the establishment of the maritime corridor for humanitarian aid to Gaza, President Christodoulides said: "We are moving forward, all the procedures are moving forward, particularly at the national level. I will also have contacts in the coming days. I will go to countries in the region, we are in contact with the United Nations (UN), we are in contact with the European Union (EU) and we hope that soon this plan, which is in fact the only plan that is currently being discussed by the international community, will be put into practice."

With regard to the recently published reports on Cyprus, the President of the Republic said: "The day after what we saw, I had a meeting at the political level. I have requested the descent to Cyprus of a team of experts from a third country who have experience in relation to such issues and last night we had a positive response. So a team is coming to Cyprus to strengthen the Cypriot authorities, all those who have already started the investigations, precisely in the context of zero tolerance to this kind of phenomena. Everything that has come to light will be investigated and the reputation and credibility of our country, which is crucial to our objective of attracting investment and having a strong and resilient economy that allows us to have a social policy and the policy that we want in the areas of education and health, is of the highest priority for us. We must safeguard the name, credibility and reputation of our country. And I am glad that there is a positive response to my request and a special team is coming to our country to strengthen the Cypriot authorities."

Asked about the issue of serious interventions in Akamas and what the Government intends to do, the President of the Republic said: "I have already called yesterday the Minister of Agriculture and the Director General of the General Directorate of the Environment Agency to freeze any work - personally I have been disturbed myself by seeing the photos - so that we can see if everything that is being done is in line with what was decided. And it was for this reason that I had the meeting yesterday and the instructions were clear."
