[PIO] Statements by the President of the Republic on the initiative for the creation of a maritime corridor for humanitarian aid in Gaza

We are in contact with Israel and we are seeing some final arrangements, President Nicos Christodoulides said today, referring to the issue of the initiative to create a sea corridor for the provision of humanitarian aid in Gaza, noting that we will proceed to the implementation stage when all the facts are there.

In his statements to journalists, addressing a conference of the Cyprus Federation of Patients' Associations (CPA), and asked to comment on AKEL's criticisms with regard to the content of publications on Cyprus, the President of the Republic said: "I don't know if AKEL wants investigations to take place in a day.

Asked what is the next step in the issue concerning the Republic's initiative to establish a sea corridor to Gaza to provide humanitarian aid, the President said that "we are in contact with Israel, we are seeing some final arrangements, we are in contact with the United Nations, I spoke with the Secretary General about the distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza, we are in contact with our partners in the EU, yesterday I discussed the issue with the Chancellor of Germany Mr. Solts and we are moving towards the implementation stage when all the facts are there."

Asked if it is a matter of time, the President said "I would not say it is a matter of time, we should not set timetables. What is important is that the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus, which is recognised by the international community, has started to be discussed very specifically in the technical details and I think that this, apart from showing our role in the region, upgrades the role of the EU in the region - because the Republic of Cyprus is the member state neighbouring the region - and also sends a message about what we want to show in practice and not in words, that we are a pillar of stability and security in the region."
