"We will study ways on how we can gradually start turning some of our communities and villages into green communities and villages," President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said today.
Speaking from Dubai, where he is participating in the work of the Climate Change Summit (COP28), the President of the Republic, referring to the Summit, said that "This is one of the most important global Summits, considering the issue at stake at the Summit here in Dubai.
It is not only to take stock of what we have done since 2015 and the Paris Summit, but we need to accelerate the pace, and I am referring in particular to our own country, to implement our climate strategy.
There are so many challenges, it is known to everyone that our country and by extension our region is facing particular and more challenges. We are already experiencing many of the impacts of Climate Change and it was in this context that the (Cyprus) initiative was taken in 2019 for a regional understanding on the implementation of all that needs to be done to address this challenge.
I think there are two main issues that arise, in addition to everything that has been heard at the Summit and from the bilateral meetings that I have had.
The first is the need for each country to 'run' much faster.
The first is the need for each country to 'run' much faster. Coming to our own country, we have some ideas, I had some contacts here, some visits, to see how we can start gradually and turn some of our communities, some of our villages into green communities, green villages. That is the first objective.
The second is how to build a culture based on the fact that what we are experiencing today concerns the whole population. Today, it is primarily the younger generation in our country, but also internationally, who are concerned about this issue, and quite rightly so, because they are concerned about their future. However, it is an issue that concerns and touches the whole population. So, we need to build a culture of the need to address all these impacts on the one hand, but also to move much faster to achieve the targets set by 2015."
