The UAE appreciates that Cyprus is an important maritime player in both the global and European shipping scene, Minister of State for Maritime Affairs Mr. Vassilis Demetriades, noting that the UAE has shown interest in Cyprus' maritime product.

In a statement to journalists on the sidelines of President Nicos Anastasiades' visit to Dubai. Demetriades said that "the visit to Dubai is constructive and I had a number of contacts with shipping companies in an effort to promote Cyprus' maritime product.

There are a lot of shipping companies in Dubai, suffice it to say that the majority of Emirati-owned ships are registered outside the Emirates and there is a large market that Cyprus could emphasize. I think an important start has been made, the signals we are getting is that Cyprus is a quality cluster, it offers maritime services, both in terms of registering ships and registering shipping companies and operating them from Cyprus.

They appreciate that Cyprus is an important maritime player in both the global and European shipping scene.

Therefore, a start has been made, they have shown interest, a systematic effort is needed, the whole promotion of Cyprus shipping in the UAE will continue and I hope it will soon bear fruit. They have greatly appreciated the national strategy that we have recently adopted and they have shown interest both in the way we are addressing the challenges of shipping, the green digital transformation, but also the fact that with our proposals we are contributing to a positive agenda both within the EU and within the International Maritime Organisation, as well as the incentives that we offer as Cypriot shipping and I hope these targeted moves that we have made will soon bear fruit.

We have also concluded a Memorandum of Cooperation with my counterpart on maritime transport, shipping, maritime safety, green transition, protection of the marine environment as well as maritime spatial planning issues which we will sign tomorrow."
