I had the opportunity today during the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism to discuss the issue of the development and exploitation of Centres of Excellence in Research and Innovation and to present the policy and plans of the Government and my Ministry of State regarding the support and exploitation of Centres of Excellence.

As we have reported, the state is committed by decisions of the Council of Ministers (2014, 2016 and 2021) to funding the seven Centres of Excellence with the amount of €15 million each.

The size of the investment by the state, as can be seen, is a significant responsibility to ensure the effective operation and exploitation of the Centres of Excellence for the benefit of the economy and social welfare.

Therefore, and as a matter of duty, I have informed our MPs of the plans of the Ministry of State and the actions and services being promoted in collaboration with the Research and Innovation Foundation (R&I Foundation), regarding the monitoring, support and exploitation of Centres of Excellence.

Specifically, I have referred to the actions for the exploitation of the valuable expertise and services of the Centres of Excellence by the state, in the context of which the Ministry of State has proceeded and will continue to support the Centres of Excellence with outreach, information and networking activities with policy makers and implementers.

In addition, I informed about the policy of the Ministry of State regarding the exploitation of research results, but also about the strengthening of extroversion and internationalisation of the actors of the ecosystem in order to attract funding from pan-European programmes such as Horizon Europe.

To this end, the Centres of Excellence can, like other actors in the ecosystem, make use of the Foundation's funding programmes, as well as the Knowledge Transfer services provided free of charge by the Foundation's Central Knowledge Transfer Office and the support services provided by the Foundation for participation in Horizon Europe.

I also stressed the need for effective monitoring and guidance of the Centres based on the needs of government policy, the economy and addressing societal challenges. To this end, the Ministry of State is developing a set of indicators and targets that will be incorporated into the monitoring system and serve as an evaluation mechanism to further support the Centres of Excellence.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that Centres of Excellence are important pillars for the development of both research activity and the competitiveness of the economy, contributing to the creation of knowledge and technological solutions in any modern economy.

The Ministry of State will continue to support and monitor the Centres of Excellence, providing support services and guidance.
