A Cooperation Programme in the field of Education for the years 2023-2027 was signed today at the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth. The Programme was signed, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, by the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athina Michaelidou and, on behalf of the Hellenic Republic, by the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Mr Kyriakos Pierrakakis: "Based on the indissoluble ties between our countries and the long-standing cooperation between our ministries, we signed today with my Greek counterpart the Programme of Cooperation in the field of Education for the years 2023-2027, laying even firmer foundations for the cooperation between Cyprus and Greece in education.

The signing of the Programme ensures, on the one hand, the strengthening of cooperation between the two ministries on issues of mutual interest at the Primary, Secondary and Higher Education levels and, on the other hand, expands the areas of cooperation, while being adapted to the requirements of modern reality and new digital data.

At the same time, it provides the necessary institutional framework for further strengthening our cooperation on issues of educational policy, teacher training and exchange of experts. It also strengthens cooperation with specialised educational centres in Greece, such as the Greek Language Centre and the Institute of Computer Technology and Publishing "Diophantus".

In addition, the Programme promotes the co-production of teaching materials and the development of joint programmes on issues such as the prevention and treatment of bullying and youth violence and delinquency, as well as on issues concerning students with a migrant background, refugees and foreign language learners.

In addition, the Programme promotes the co-production of teaching materials and the development of joint programmes on issues such as the prevention and treatment of bullying and youth violence and delinquency, as well as on issues concerning students with a migrant background, refugees and foreign language learners.

It also paves the way for a more convergent policy within the European Union, the Council of Europe, UNESCO, UNECE and other European and international organisations and for closer cooperation in the context of our countries' participation in international surveys.

Beyond this, the Programme ensures a broad cooperation in technical and vocational education and training, lifelong learning and education for the environment and sustainable development.

Furthermore, it provides the institutional framework for the granting of scholarships and the creation of a support mechanism for Cypriot and Greek students studying in Greece and Cyprus, respectively, in order to address their problems in a prompt and timely manner. During our meeting with Mr. Pierrakakis today, we had the opportunity to discuss the problems of Cypriot students studying in Greece.

Finally, he promotes the twinning of schools, exchanges and educational visits of students and teachers, summer camps, as well as the exchange of good practices between schools and teachers in Greece and Cyprus.

The signing of the Cooperation Programme in the field of Education is the fruit of the joint efforts of the Governments of our two countries to continue and further deepen their relations, as well as the commitment of our two ministries for closer cooperation at all levels of education," the Minister of Education concluded: "It is a great pleasure to be in Cyprus. And it is an even greater pleasure that today, with this Cooperation Programme, which we are jointly signing, we will have even more opportunities to learn more from each other, to deepen our relations and, as one might say in the language of technology, to 'interoperate'. As you rightly said, we do indeed have a lot to learn from each other and we certainly should not repeat the same work when this work is done either in Cyprus or in Greece. One can see it clearly in Education, how digital media - from the interactive whiteboards that we are currently installing in classrooms to the overall material, the digital reinforcement teaching that we will soon have available - how all this could be jointly exploited.

I would like to reiterate this from Cyprus: we want to learn from your example in terms of how higher education has acted as an economic pole of development and as a pole of social cohesion, making use of both your public and non-state universities. We believe that Cyprus is a case study, an example from which we too can learn, making use of the country's rich human potential in higher education. I think we will have many, many opportunities to discuss this further and to take many, many mutual actions. Thank you again and thank you and your team for your hospitality."
