More staff than requested will be assigned to the Provincial Self-Government Organizations (POAs) so that their operation will be smooth from July 1, Minister of Interior Mr. Κωνσταντίνος Ιωάννου, arriving this morning at the General Assembly of the Union of Cyprus Communities.

Speaking to media representatives, Mr. Ioannou praised the very good work done all this time by the Union of Cyprus Communities for the proper preparation of the Communities in view of the Local Government Reform and thanked the President of the Union, Mr. Andreas Kitromilides, for the good cooperation. "We are on a very good path, the organizational charts have been made, the Budget models have been made and I think that as far as the Communities are concerned, the reform of Local Government will have many benefits", said the Minister.

He went on to explain that with the creation of 30 new Clusters, the Communities that will be clustered will now have common services, scientific staff will be hired, which will provide accounting, administrative and other services, they will be able to take part in European Union programmes.

The information that I have on a weekly basis is that, with regard to the EDAs, we are on track and buildings have been found."

From the point of view of the Ministry of Interior and the actions being taken to properly staff the licensing sector that will be transferred to the EDAs, Ioannou pointed out that, with decisions that have been taken, "I can now state publicly, the EDAs will be staffed with more personnel than they have requested."

So as far as staffing is concerned, there will be no such issue from 1 July". With adequate staffing and the huge change being made in the Planning and Zoning Department by implementing a series of 22 measures to simplify the permitting process, the Minister expressed confidence that there would be no problem in permitting, except for the first period, which would be an adjustment period, since staff from three different agencies with different cultures would now be grouped together. "But in terms of staff and procedures, with the measures we have taken, there will be more staff than what has been requested and simplified procedures," the Home Minister concluded.
