The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athena Michaelidou, had a meeting today at the Ministry with the President and the members of the Secretariat of the PDOED, during which issues related to the start of the school year were discussed.
After the meeting, the Minister in her statements to journalists said: "We had a meeting with PDED today on issues relating to the start of the school year. The common goal is to have a smooth start and then, of course, the best possible conditions for the beginning of the school year.
I would like to mention that our meeting was very constructive, in a very positive atmosphere, in which various concerns were raised and a discussion took place on the basis of pedagogical criteria and research data.
I am pleased to say that we are progressing very well on the issues of staffing, books, building issues concerning improvements and extensions to primary and nursery schools. We also discussed the issue of violence and delinquency, as well as the new programs that are being integrated into elementary education to improve our education system and learning outcomes.
We also addressed challenges, such as, for example, the chronic issue of air conditioning, on which we have long made our mark. It is the intention of the Government, it is the intention of our Ministry to assist, to support in practical terms, so that the installation of air conditioners can begin in the coming period on the basis of specific criteria, which criteria of course relate to safety issues. So above all is the safety of our children and with this in mind and with a specific Guide, which will be sent to the School Departments, we will start in the coming months the installation of air conditioners in classrooms, although several air conditioners have already been installed in other classrooms of the school.
We also discussed the issue of sexual education. We stressed that the misinformation that is going on cannot continue. I stress again that nothing changes in primary education. Especially in pre-primary and primary education we are continuing the course as normal. It is a module in the Life Education course, which is taught exactly as it has been taught for the last 12 years, without any problem, with the aim of self-protection for our children.
In conclusion, I would like to reiterate our willingness for continuous dialogue, for constant communication and exchange of views with the educational organisations and our sincere intention to discuss many issues concerning our educational system.
In conclusion, I would like to reiterate our willingness for continuous dialogue, for continuous communication and exchange of views with the educational organisations and our sincere intention to discuss many issues concerning our educational system. Because the goal is normality in education, calmness in education, so that our children can have what they deserve, the right to a better education system," the Education Minister concluded.
