The campaign of the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, the Ministry of State for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy and the Press and Information Office for the promotion and promotion of female role models in STEAM professions started today.
In the campaign, the videos of 13 female role models in STEAM professions will be shown on Social Media, per week, in order to inspire and become role models for younger women who may want to follow in their footsteps. The female role models participating in the campaign are: Eleonora Kaiser (Astrophysicist), Panagiota Polycarpou (Social Entrepreneur), Anastasia Liopetriti (Social Entrepreneur), Maria Solomou (Business Consultant), Monica Polemiti (Business Consultant), Vassilia Taramouna (Postdoctoral Researcher), Christina Siaila (Educational Technologist), Margarita Zachariou (Neuroscientist), Charitini Tsangari (Academic Statistician), Athena Cassiou (Director), Magdalena Zira (Director), Nedi Antoniadou (Actress) and Elena Georgiou Strouthou (Computer Engineer).
The Director of the Press and Information Office Mrs. Aliki Stylianou said in her greeting: "The Press and Information Office, which is constantly being upgraded, could not be absent from this campaign" and added that, without a doubt, the media today play a very important role in informing and informing citizens.
Gender Equality Commissioner Ms. Josie Christodoulou, in her greeting, stressed: "This is not a competition between women and men. We want men to graduate equally with a degree, a master's degree, a doctorate and to participate, of course, in the labour market in STEAM professions and in any sector they wish. But we also want women to be able to have the choice to freely pursue whatever career they wish. We need and want balanced participation in STEAM professions. She added: "We want balanced participation because when we design policies, make decisions and take actions, there is a differential impact on both genders. So we should integrate the gender dimension when designing policies and actions for equal positive impact."
In his greeting, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Mr. Filippos Hatzicharias said: "From the very first moment of taking office, I have been in constant communication with the Commissioner's Office and other stakeholders in Cyprus to promote targeted actions. In addition to this campaign, as a Deputy Ministry we are actively contributing to the formulation of the National Strategy for Gender Equality by planning specific actions and measures. We are already in consultation with relevant bodies in Cyprus - the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner, the Office of the Environment Commissioner and the Youth Agency - to implement actions to enhance digital skills among women in rural/remote areas, which we would like to extend to other vulnerable groups of the population.
In her address, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth said that, taking into account all the developments and challenges in this regard, the Ministry is implementing an integrated interdisciplinary approach to teaching, covering the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in both primary and secondary education. "As far as Primary Education is concerned," he said, "the actions are part of the STEM programme, while in Secondary Education the actions are part of the institution of the all-day school of Interdisciplinary-Disciplinary Learning with two directions, that of STEAM teaching and that of teaching the Greek language and Greek culture. The measurable results and the significant steps that have been achieved so far by the implementation of the STEM teaching model, linking school, social life, the labour market and entrepreneurial activity and cultivating important skills in our children, tomorrow's citizens, can only make us very happy". As Ms Michaelidou noted: "We ought to take additional actions; we are already promoting programmes that involve the educational and student community in deepening concepts, skills and practices related to the fields of these sciences. At the same time, as stated in the Governance Programme, in addition to the implementation of the institution already this year in more school units, our ultimate goal is to extend it to all cities, as well as to integrate the STEAM approach into the general curriculum.
