The European Parliament Week, co-organised by the European Parliament (EP) and the current Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), started today in Brussels on 12 and 13 February 2024.
The 25th anniversary of the euro and the future of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) were discussed in the context of the work of the EP's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON). "First of all, I would like to say that I could not imagine what the small Cypriot economy would be like if it was not part of the Euro in this globalized economic environment and I have no doubt that the accession of Cyprus to the Eurozone in 2008 was an absolutely positive development.
The President of the European Central Bank stated a few months ago that the Euro is "the strongest form of European integration and represents a united Europe working together, protecting and benefiting all citizens."
Although I could assume or know the POLITICAL answer to the question I am about to ask, I would like to hear the TECHNICAL answer from the academics and technocrats we have heard today:
- What about the enlargement of the Eurozone? If the Euro really represents "a united Europe working together", why did we stop at 20 countries? Is it necessary to enlarge the Euro to all the countries of the European Union, or is it not? Is it right to leave this issue 'aside' or should it go ahead?"
