It is with great pleasure that I welcome tonight's event of the Women's Movement of the Union of Displaced Communities of Famagusta in collaboration with the Cyprus Writers' Union, which is dedicated to poetry.

I would like to congratulate the Union of Displaced Communities of Famagusta for organizing such events, which manage to preserve the memory of our occupied communities and the relationships of their people, and which at the same time promote the poetic creation of our land.

The Deputy Ministry of Culture encourages events like tonight's, where poets are honoured and the reading and writing of poetry is promoted. Tonight, on the one hand, promotes the cultural heritage and creativity of poets, and on the other, supports poetry, which can be a source of inspiration and exploration for all of us, forming a rich spiritual environment.

World Poetry Day is celebrated every year on 21 March, the official first day of spring, when nature awakens and rebirths, and with it man's desire to create. It is no coincidence, then, that during this new beginning, poetry, one of humanity's most precious forms of linguistic expression, has been chosen to be celebrated. With all that is happening around us, the celebration of poetry serves as a reminder that, as a means of expression, it is beside us in every unpleasant or pleasant moment of our lives, to tame our souls, to draw us into the melody of words and to lead our souls on journeys into the sea of imagination and truth.

Dear fellow travellers,

This year marks 50 years of waiting for a solution to the Cyprus problem and a return to our ancestral lands. The Deputy Ministry of Culture recognizes the importance of the work you are doing as the Union of Displaced Communities of Famagusta and in particular for the promotion of culture, which is the means to preserve our heritage, tradition and identity. Cypriot poetry is of high quality, which deals with the great themes of life and literature, and through it the history, character and culture of our country is promoted.

I congratulate the Women's Movement of the Union of Displaced Communities of Famagusta and the Cyprus Writers' Union for this important initiative for cooperation.
