[PIO] "European Year of Skills: continuing the effort"

On Thursday, 18 April 2024, an event entitled "European Year of Skills: the continuation of the effort" was held at the Old Town Hall of Nicosia, with the participation of the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. The work of the Minister of Labour, Labour and Social Affairs, Mr. Yiannis Panayiotou, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athina Michaelides, the Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Mykonos, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Mr. Yiannis Panayiotou, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athina Michaelides, the Member of the European Parliament. Dr Barbara Kauffmann, Director of the Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion of the European Commission, Dr Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights of the European Commission, who welcomed the event with a video message, and with the participation of representatives of organisations and other stakeholders. The event marked both the end of the European Year of Skills and the continuation of the effort to improve the skills of our country's human resources.

The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yannis Panagiotou, referred to the development of the implementation of the Action Plan for the European Year of Skills. The Minister underlined the emphasis placed on four important categories of skills - digital skills, skills related to green growth and the environment, skills for safety and health at work and those related to quality - as well as the overall aim for a people-centred relationship between state and citizens. He also stressed the Government's intention to continue investing in the development of our country's human resources, which will contribute decisively to our path towards the double transition and to the further development of the economy and improvement of society.

In the second part of the event, Ms Maria Nikolaou Christou, Deputy Director of the Productivity Centre (KEPA), presented the Report of the National Action Plan for the European Year of Skills and Mr. Yiannis Mourouzidis, Director General of the Cyprus Human Resources Development Authority (CDA) and National Coordinator of the European Year of Skills, developed the framework for continuing the effort to upgrade the knowledge and skills of Cyprus' human resources as the main pillar for the development of businesses and the economy in general.

Two round table discussions followed. The first one, on the importance of acquiring or upgrading skills for the implementation of the green and digital transition, was attended by Dr Barbara Kauffmann, Director of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, Dr Neofytos Papadopoulos, Director General of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr Elias Markatzis, Director of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs. Maria Nikolaou Christou, Deputy Director of the Cyprus Productivity Centre, and Dr. Angeliki Kylilili, Environmental Officer, General Directorate of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Anna Danti, Head of Communication of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus.

The second discussion, on the promotion of skills to address the needs of business and the economy, was moderated by Mr. Michalis Antoniou, Director General of OEB, Mr. Emilios Michael, representative of KEBE, Mr. Andreas Matsas, Secretary General of SEK, Mrs. Sotiroula Charalambous, Secretary General of PEO, and Mr. Stelios Christodoulou, President of IOC. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Yannis Mourouzidis.

The event concluded with a discussion and questions from the attendees and with the conviction that all will contribute to achieving the common vision of continuous upgrading and renewal of the knowledge and skills of the human resources of Cyprus, in order to achieve the adaptation and competitiveness of employees and businesses, in the volatile conditions prevailing in the labour market.
