SESSIONSxSPEL: series queer actions (June - December 2023)
The Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of State for Culture informs the public that, in October, the State Gallery of Contemporary Art - SPEL continues to welcome the public en masse to the Sessions programme, in a new series of events including film screenings, open discussions, musical performances, performances, spatial and art installations, and a magical birthday party.
SATURDAY 7/10 8:30pm Being the cat on the edge of the roof (Nurtane Karagil)
Nurtane Karagil invites us to SPEL's rooftop, Cloud, to react to our thoughts and challenges like a cat on the edge of a roof.
Nurtane Karagil is a visual artist who uses a wide range of artistic media including painting, illustration, sculpture, video and photography. Her art deals with the power of memory, dreams and surreal fantasies juxtaposed with everyday life situations. Through this contrast, she invites the viewer into an uncanny zone where the boundaries of reality are somehow more visible.
The event is part of the activities curated by Urban Gorillas as part of the European Creative Rooftop Network project, co-funded by Creative Europe.
WEDNESDAY11/10 20:30 Sssssinema: Faggy Films as Archiving Tools (Queer Wave x Cerebral Gym)
Queer Wave artistic director Diego Armando Aparicio, in collaboration with Sessions' Cerebral Gym curated by Loizos Olybios, will present a series of films that function as tools for creating archives - real, imagined, organized, messy. Queer Wave x Cerebral Gym screenings will run during the months of October, November and December 2023. The screenings will take place on the first Wednesday of each month, with a total of three repeats, on the dates of October 11, November 8 and December 13.
Film curation: Loizos Olympios, Diego Armando Aparicio
SATURDAY 10/14 8:30pm BIRTHDAY: ALL MUSIC IS DANCE MUSIC
As Sessions completes its first trip around the sun since its opening at Sapphous 6, you are invited to a special anniversary celebration of the mischievousness and charming magic that brought us together. Taking inspiration from Loizos Olympios' statement that "ALL MUSIC IS DANCE MUSIC", we use the phrase as a guiding principle to curate unique DJ sets, a special performance by Michela Pelusio, Space Time Helix, and a birthday ceremony by Garilyn Monrose and Korallida.
SpaceTime Helix, an audiovisual instrument designed and performed by Michela Pelusio since 2012, offers a site-specific audiovisual spectacle with a colossal rotating wave within a white string, forming an extended helix that extends to the ceiling. The surface, bright and translucent, projects waves that cross it and disappear into the distant future, beyond time and space. A white string, at first a mere line and boundary, transforms into a monumental, rotating standing wave, a huge spiral connecting the earthly realm with the celestial. It orchestrates a dance of vibrations, blending the physical with the metaphysical, evoking visual impressions and emotional journeys for those caught in its vortex.
WEDNESDAY18/10 19:00 Legally Queer vol 2 (Queer Collective Cy)
Legally Queer is an initiative that focuses on exploring the impact of the legislative landscape on the LGBTQ+ community in Cyprus. Our mission is to empower LGBTQ+ people by providing accessible information on the legal issues that affect our daily lives and our fundamental rights. Through informative discussions, we aim to raise awareness, address common challenges and create bonds within the community.
Our initiative goes beyond legal issues; it creates a space for LGBTQ+ people to connect and share experiences. By coming together, we can build a collective consciousness, highlighting common struggles and victories. Through these interactions, we aspire to foster a stronger sense of unity and solidarity within the community. Legally Queer strives to facilitate open conversations, promote awareness and strengthen the bonds that unite us as LGBTQ+ people in Cyprus.
SAT 21/10 20:30 Sleepover.
Lay down. Close your eyes - you can if you want to!
You are now part of this performance, a reality interrupted by dreams.
Leave your flesh at the door, there is no shame here.
Relax. Sleep - you can if you want to!
Wake up! Was that a dream?
S[L]ee
again.
As we fall fall fall fall [ASLEEP] together, the space collapses, and we give shape to the world of our desires.
Leave your flesh at the door is an invitation to a collective dream. Because dreaming is always a solitary act, but what if we spent the night together? The tent becomes a bed, big enough for everyone! As the audience waits for Sleepover to take them, they witness a series of events where a world of contradictions, repressed desires and imagination emerges.
Leave your flesh at the door and come to our sleepover-an all-night evening of performances, screenings and music. And who knows, maybe in the morning the world will be a different place.
We invite you to come with your pajamas, pillows and blankets.
Making our Bed Together (Naya Karakosta), Constellations of Awakening (Writer/Director: Maria Masonou, Ioli Kaskani, Dramaturgy: Ioulita Toumazi, Music Composition: Manos Stratis, Musicians: Andreas Zembylas, Manos Stratis), 200 Years of Sleep (Pablo Temboury), Detective Larry H. SAT 28/10 16:00 Rooftop Stories: Reimagining Sustainable Urban Living (Urban Gorillas)
Urban Gorillas invite the audience to interact with the spatial installation "Agora", currently being adopted on the rooftop of the SPEL building, to imagine it as an urban garden and to express themselves creatively on the issues of sustainability and social and artistic innovation. A participatory planting activity will transform the modular and mobile structure of the Market into a temporary green oasis and allow new conversations to grow and new fruitful opportunities to be explored on our rooftops. The planting will start at 16:00 and from 18:00 there will be a discussion between an interdisciplinary group of guests and the public.
*This action is part of the activities of Urban Gorillas within the European project Creative Rooftop Network, which is co-funded by the Creative Europe funding programme and the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth.
**Agora is a mobile structure designed by Urban Gorillas with support from the Commonwealth Foundation and the JEC World Commemorative fund, which is currently installed on the rooftop of Sessions x SPEL, Cloud.
