I was delighted to accept the invitation of my friend the Mayor of Nicosia and the Municipal Council to join me for the inauguration of the new Municipality meeting and events hall and the EKATE building, which are a jewel for the Municipality and the walled city of Nicosia.
The high architectural aesthetics of the lecture hall we are inaugurating today and its harmonious integration into the heart of the traditional core of Nicosia, highlight the modern essence of the capital, while preserving its historic character.
The reconstruction of the new lecture hall and the restoration of the listed building of the former Chamber of Fine Arts (EKATE) are concrete examples of the intention and will of the Government and the Municipality of Nicosia to jointly develop actions and initiatives for the revitalization of the area of the walled city of Nicosia. It is for this reason that we stand practically alongside the Nicosia Municipality, investing in new projects and the revival of existing infrastructure, which renew the image of the city and benefit local communities. These projects were 80% co-funded by the Ministry of Interior, through the Area Regeneration Programme along the Green Line for a total amount of approximately €3 million (€2,760 million for the hall and €209,000 for EKATE).
In addition, the Ministry of Interior, by promoting a series of Plans in close cooperation with the Nicosia Municipality, aims to create conditions for the economic and business development of the historic centre of Nicosia and to attract residents, especially young people.
By way of example, I would like to mention the Sponsorship Scheme for the Enhancement of Business Activity in the Walled City of Nicosia, with a total budget of €10 million over a period of five years, the Sponsorship Scheme for Student Residences, with a total amount of €15 million, the Housing Plan for the Walled City of Nicosia, with an expenditure of €5 million, and the digitisation of the architectural heritage in the Walled City of Nicosia.
The plan for the revitalisation of the walled city of Nicosia is comprehensive and ambitious. With the completion of the important projects we are launching today, we are strengthening our joint effort to maximise the potential of Nicosia as a cultural, business and social hub.
Dear Constantine, I would like to convey the Government's commitment to initiatives, projects and actions that help promote Nicosia as a modern European capital, while at the same time promoting and highlighting its historicity and multicultural character. Rest assured that the Christodoulides Government will continue to support you substantially in order to improve the daily life of the residents of the area and encourage its economic development.
Thank you.
