It is with great pleasure that I attend today's inauguration ceremony of the Pancyprian Trauma Centre, the operation of which is a milestone in the system of modern trauma care in our country. The presence of the President of the Republic himself here today reflects the importance that the state attaches to innovative actions for the benefit of the patient, such as the establishment and operation of the Pancyprian Trauma Centre.
The long-standing gaps in the treatment of trauma in our country and the increasing number of injuries have made it an absolute necessity for even more timely and specialised intervention in the management of these cases.
From the data I receive from the trauma archive, it appears that the operation of the Centre for almost two years now has made the greatest contribution. After all, the numbers speak for themselves. For a significant period, before the operation of the Trauma Centre at Nicosia General Hospital (03/2021-09/2022), the length of hospitalization of wounded patients with a significant degree of injury severity in a ward was 20.12 days. After the operation of the Trauma Centre and for a corresponding period of time (09/2022-04/2024), this duration decreased to 15.15 days. Similarly, the duration of hospitalisation for injuries with a higher degree of severity is decreasing, from 38.63 days to 16.91 days.
In addition, 1,628 cases with blunt trauma and 96 sustained injuries have been treated at Nicosia Hospital over a period of 21 months, from 19/09/2022 to 04/04/2024. Five hundred and thirty cases have been treated by the Trauma Centre. Of these, 97.19% have survived, while mortality constitutes 2.81% of these cases, compared to 3.45% in the previous period.
For these reasons, I believe that the intervention of the Ministry of Health was crucial in promoting the study for the reorganization of the trauma system in Cyprus and the operation of a specialized Centre for the provision of services to the injured.
The operation of the Trauma Centre offers patients immediate accessibility to quality health services based on international protocols. It also offers the opportunity for the health system to integrate innovative specialized services, constantly upgrading and improving the quality of the services provided.
The establishment and operation of the National Trauma Committee, with its current composition, enhances the sense of security in terms of the scientific approach to the issue. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the President and all members of the Committee for their substantial contribution to the adoption and implementation of measures towards the organisation of a scientifically qualified Trauma Centre, as well as the supervision of its work in terms of its efficient operation in the context of upgrading the trauma system in Cyprus. Special mention should be made of the Chairperson of the Committee, whose leadership, vision and dedication have been key factors in the establishment and operation of the Centre. A continuous work, sometimes carried out under adverse conditions.
As I am aware, the Trauma Centre already uses state-of-the-art equipment and is staffed with appropriately trained and experienced medical, nursing and support staff, who contribute to the crucial care of patients and their person-centred approach. The handover of the upgraded building facilities of the Centre is expected soon, which will contribute greatly to the further qualitative upgrading of its services.
Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that for a modern state, health and the way it is managed, as a valuable social good accessible to all, is a panacea. Enhancing the quality of services and patient satisfaction are inextricably intertwined with this.
Let me therefore take my turn to thank the President of the Republic for his presence here and his practical support for the project at the highest political level. I would also like to thank OKYPY and all the participants in this joint effort and wish the sustainability and further development of the project.
