It is with pleasure that I accepted the invitation to sponsor and welcome today's workshop, which is organised by the Department of Nursing of the Cyprus University of Technology with funding from the Cyprus Nursing and Midwifery Council. The important topic addressed by the workshop "Modern knowledge: power in the hands of nurses and midwives" is, I believe, the "key" for you as health professionals to continue offering high quality services through your continuous professional development.

Friends,

The role of nurses is fundamental and vital to the health system. You nurses offer not only physical treatment but also psychological support to patients. With your expertise you contribute to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, while your humanity enhances patient confidence and safety. We want you to secure this trust on an ongoing basis from patients by providing a high quality service. You are the core of the healthcare team and make a key contribution to the quality of healthcare.

Now as for the extraordinary role of midwives, you are women's companions during one of the most important moments of their lives. With your experience, sensitivity and professionalism, you shape a safe and emotionally supportive environment for the new families that are being created. One of our goals at the Ministry of Health is to promote natural childbirth. The strategy for this extremely important issue will be brought before Cabinet shortly. I should even take this opportunity to note that through our own actions and in consultation with the OAI, the provision of increased payment for normal deliveries is being promoted so that the role of midwives is also enhanced.

Therefore, the work of all of you, both nurses and midwives, is truly an invaluable gift to patients, newborns and their families. For this very reason, continuing education in the field of nursing becomes imperative in today's demanding times. In order to be competitive and to be able to provide high quality nursing care, Nursing Science must continually adapt to developments and changes in its environment. At the same time, in this context, the personal need of nurses to renew and restructure their professional training, based on modern methods of nursing work, must be met.

You, my dear friends, have contributed - as I have been informed with satisfaction - the most in highlighting the distinctive academic, scientific and research contribution of Nursing and Midwifery Science, as well as the international recognition that our country receives.

I take this opportunity to honour the remarkable work that all of you are doing in your University, especially in the Department of Nursing. It is truly interesting and commendable that the Nursing Department of CUT, from 2018 onwards, is among the best Nursing Departments in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Your successes reflect on the entire society of Cyprus. Because, by promoting your own legitimate educational ambitions in your field, you contribute to the creation of a country rich in academic knowledge, with highly qualified scientists, ready to strengthen the field of Nursing and Midwifery science, for the benefit of the Cypriot citizen and the Cypriot patient.

To conclude my greeting, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your dedication and love for the profession. You are the light that illuminates the path of care and we thank you for your dedication.

Finally, I would like to congratulate you on today's event and wish you every success in the proceedings of your conference.
