It is with great pleasure that I welcome all of you and especially our students here today at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. The new generation of Geotechnical Scientists who, after completing their studies, will serve the agricultural sector, the primary sector of our country.

As you all may know, the granting of scholarships has been included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan - Cyprus tomorrow, an ambitious tool to address the main challenges of the country's economy. The need for the inclusion of actions to promote the professional skills of our farmers and the introduction of the concept of entrepreneurship in our agri-food units became evident through the sectoral studies.

We are convinced that the provision of incentives will increase the interest of our young people to enrol in study programmes in the field of agriculture. We expect that university training of new entrants to the agri-food sector - whether they will become competent agricultural advisors or farm owners and managers - will enable the introduction of innovation, a sustainable approach and, ultimately, a successful agri-economic model for the country's agricultural and livestock enterprises.

This investment in our young scientists is combined with the strong system of agricultural applications implemented by the Department of Agriculture and private consultants throughout the free areas of Cyprus. An effective system for transferring knowledge and promoting innovation in the agricultural sector. Such systems, known by the English terminology "Agriculture Knowledge and Innovation Systems" or the acronym "AKIS", are also supported by the Strategic Plans of the Common Agricultural Policy of the countries of the European Union, including of course Cyprus.

Friends,

In closing, I would like to congratulate our students for securing the scholarships and wish them progress and excellence. I also thank all of you for attending the event today, demonstrating your interest in upgrading our agri-food sector. I assure you that the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Government of Nicos Christodoulides will continue to encourage and support our farmers in practice and cooperate, to this end, with the scientific community of the country.

On this occasion, I announce the announcement of five (5) scholarships for first-year students during the current academic year 2023 - 2024, at the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Biotechnology and Food Science, This Government remains committed to strengthening the primary sector of the economy, actively aiming to strengthen it in every way possible, giving opportunities and prospects to our young people.

Thank you.
