It is with great pleasure that I am with you today to launch the new online campaign entitled "Women's Stories: The STEAM Edition", doing our part to introduce a new culture and promote the participation of women in professions where, according to national and international studies, women are under-represented, namely Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
I would like to begin by expressing my warm thanks to all the women who participated in the campaign, highlighting their actions and achievements, while at the same time conveying to all of us the love and enthusiasm for the professional path they have followed.
Let me make special mention of the role of the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner in coordinating this effort, but also to our partners - the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth and the Press and Information Office for their contribution.
Dear friends,
The young generation defines the future and raising healthy role models is particularly important. I am confident that together we can highlight and increase career opportunities for women in all sectors, but especially where there is a gap in representation, for example in the STEAM professions.
From the first moment I took office, we have been in constant communication with the Commissioner's Office and other bodies in Cyprus to promote targeted actions.
In addition to this campaign, as a Deputy Ministry, we actively contribute to the formulation of the National Strategy for Gender Equality by planning specific actions and measures.
We are already in consultation with relevant bodies in Cyprus - the Ministry of Labour, the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner, the Office of the Environment Commissioner and the Youth Agency - to implement actions to strengthen digital skills among women in rural/remote areas, which we would like to extend to other vulnerable groups of the population.
In conclusion, I wish the campaign every success and hope that this is only the beginning of a series of initiatives that will contribute to further highlight the work and achievements of women in Cyprus.
Our Ministry of State could not fail to be at the forefront of efforts to attract more women to research, innovation and technology, and we will not stop highlighting the female role models living and working among us.
Thank you.
