Workers' common goal is reunification on the basis of an ICO, say PEO and Dev İş
Workers' common goal is the reunification of the island on the basis of a bizonal one, The heads of the PEO and Dev İş delegations told the Cyprus News Agency that they met in physical presence after a long time and discussed the problems that workers face on both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides.
In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, the president of the T/C guild, Koral Asiam, said that they discussed in particular how they can solve the problems of T/C workers on the G/C side concerning either the pension system or the health system.
They will continue, he added, the joint action they have been developing for years with the PEO since they believe that in a reunited Cyprus the economy and the workplace will be common. They discussed, he said, an 8-point joint action programme which they will carry out this year. For Women's Day, he noted, there will be a joint event, which is being planned.
Asked what he considers the most important problem, Assiam said that the Cyprus problem, but at the labour and economic level, the fact that the economic system in the "north" acts dependent on Turkey and this must be ended, saying that the phrase "whoever gets money, gets orders" is well known. For this reason, she continued, one of our biggest problems is that the will of the TCs has been subject to usurpation.
Sotiroula Charalambous told CBC that in the current circumstances where the two-state solution is the official position of the TC leader and the contradictions and regressions of the E/C side have removed the goal of the solution, PEO and Dev İş choose to continue what they have been doing for many, many years. "Remain committed and committed to the solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation. Because it is clear in our minds that the perspective of the workers for a better future, too, is through the solution and reunification."
Charalambous added that one part of the joint effort involves creating joint activities that bring together workers from both sides. She noted that the workers' problems are currently common. "Both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot workers are being hit at the moment by accuracy. Of course, in the T/C community the problems are much more acute because of the dependence on Turkey."
Workers on both sides, he continued, are facing insecurity and fear that has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Recognizing this, he said, we decided to further strengthen class solidarity among workers. "The struggles of the workers in the T/C community also concern the Greek workers." That is why, she continued, the need for mutual information and for joint actions to express this solidarity was stressed.
In this way we keep alive the need for reunification of the country, Charalambous said, but we build the prospect of Greek and Turkish workers living and working together in a reunified homeland.
Asked if the problems raised by the T/C guild for T/C workers on the Greek side are easy to solve, the PEA General Secretary said that both guilds have been doing actions over time and this kind of problems will be solved completely with the reunification of the country. For them to be resolved there needs to be the necessary political will to find solutions that can work while we are in an abnormal situation due to occupation and separation, he concluded.
According to a statement from the PEA, the programme of joint activities for 2022, which will be developed on both sides, will include: joint actions on the occasion of International Women's Day; participation in the events to be held in memory of Kavazoglou and Misiaouli; organization of events and joint celebration of Labour Day; celebration of September 1 World Trade Union Day of Action for Peace in cooperation with other progressive forces fighting for peace, joint support for the international event on 3 October proclaimed by the WFTU as World Workers' Day of Action, organisation of information meetings at provincial and sectoral level and organisation of visits to monuments (Lefka-Pelendri) and the erection of a monument in Paphos to Ahmed Yahya.
