The Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom arrives in Cyprus for a three-day official visit

The Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom arrives in Cyprus on Monday afternoon for a three-day official visit to Cyprus, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, at the invitation of Speaker of the House of Commons Anita Demetriou.

A statement by the House of Commons said that this is the first official visit of the Speaker of the House of Commons to Cyprus, which is a milestone for inter-parliamentary relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom. Sir Lindsay Hoyle will be accompanied by senior officials of the House of Commons.

As he said in an interview with the Cyprus News Agency, the visit is an opportunity to reaffirm the strong Cyprus-UK friendship and mutual commitment to democratic values.

The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, said he met the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anita Demetriou, at the European Conference of Speakers of Parliaments last October in Athens.

"Not only did I have the opportunity for a good discussion, but I received the invitation to come and commemorate the 60th anniversary of the independence of Cyprus, even though two years later because of the pandemic," adding that it was an "absolute honour for me".

The Speaker of the House of Commons will be received by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and will have separate meetings with the Speaker of the House, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Harris Georgiades and Members of the Committee. The Speaker will host a formal lunch in honour of her British counterpart.

The British official will address the House of Commons in a special sitting of the House on Tuesday at 4.00 pm at the Filoxenia Conference Centre. He will also join the Speaker in a roundtable discussion with university students on "Parliaments and Democracy: Parliamentary Transparency in Practice".

Sir Lindsay Hoyle will visit, together with the Speaker, the walled city of Nicosia. He will also visit the British contingent of UNFICYP and the area of the Episkopi and Akrotiri bases.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle will be received by the Speaker of Parliament at Larnaca Airport.
