As a consequence of the onslaught of the coronavirus, many workers have left Cyprus, resulting in various sectors looking for staff, for example in catering as well as the hotel industry.

Speaking to the Cyprus Times, PASYXE Director General Filocypros Roussounides said that the problem of finding staff has been going on for several months and it is something that, if not resolved as soon as possible, will have disastrous consequences.

"If we cannot find the staff the problem at the moment is both quantitative and qualitative and we cannot meet the high expectations of our tourism partners, in terms of tourism services and their level, it may have bad and disastrous consequences for the near future," he said.

As Roussounides explained, 2022 is a year when several countries will be repositioned on the tourism map that are competitive to us, so if the issue is not resolved, they will gain ground in the battle of the tourism market against Cyprus. "We also need to be at the highest level we can be to get the share we deserve so that we have."

Not finding staff creates serious problems such as, under-opening of hotels, or some being at risk of not opening.

Already for the serious issue created were informed with relevant letters to the Ministries of Labor and Finance, in order to find a solution while hoteliers to date remain in the "listening".

Asked about wages and whether they play a role in the difficulty of finding staff from Cyprus, he pointed out that the industry is governed by a minimum wage and perhaps the Cypriot mentality also plays a role. "Salaries depending on positions and experience are around 870-900 euros or so, such as maids, or kitchen helpers," he said.
