Johnson says Putin has already committed war crimes
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson accused Russian President Putin of committing war crimes in Ukraine from the floor of the House of Commons.
During a regular session of questions to the Prime Minister on Wednesday afternoon, Scottish National Party leader Ian Blackford said, addressing Mr Johnson, that "Vladimir Putin is a war criminal and must face justice in The Hague."
In response, the British Prime Minister said: "We have already seen from Vladimir Putin's regime the use of munitions fired at innocent civilians. In my view this is already being caught as a war crime and I know that the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court is already investigating."
Most of the session included questions from the opposition on why the British government has not already sanctioned more Russian oligarchs with assets in Britain, with a particular focus on Roman Abramovich.
Johnson responded that the government was doing all it could to expose "illegal Russian loot" and that the noose around the Putin regime would continue to tighten.
The session began with MPs giving a standing ovation to the Ukrainian ambassador to London, Vadim Pristiko, who was watching from the gallery, in a rare gesture for the body. Addressing the Ukrainian diplomat, the Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle said applause was normally forbidden in the chamber, but in doing so the legislature wanted to show its respect and support for the Ukrainian people.
