The legal department of the supermarket chain remains adamant, even though the police officers who arrested the 70-year-old woman asked them not to proceed, when they heard her story
An elderly woman, affected by unbearable financial problems, attempted to steal some food from a supermarket in Ilion on Saturday afternoon.
The store managers realized the woman's move and, despite the urging of other supermarket customers not to take the woman to court and legal proceedings against her, the store manager was adamant and said "the orders he has are very strict for this case". The products, according to OPEN, cost almost 40 euros.
The manager called the police, who took the 70-year-old woman to the nearest police station. There the woman revealed that she was forced to steal because she has big financial problems, she has no money and a mortgage with a very large arrangement, which she pays with her pension to avoid having her house taken away.
The police officers were moved by the grandmother's story and since there were customers who offered to cover the amount, they wanted to close the matter without proceeding with legal proceedings.
However, as OPEN reported, the supermarket managers pushed for the police officers to start the process of filing a complaint against the woman. Neighbors of the elderly woman then contacted supermarket officials and asked that the lawsuit be dropped, but the response they received was that "company policy is not to drop these types of lawsuits."
She tried to commit suicide out of shame
A neighbor of the elderly woman spoke to OPEN and revealed that the woman attempted suicide. "She almost hurt us in the evening. She took three pressure pills together and we took her to the hospital. The grandmother is trying to commit suicide because she can't stand the shame and she's afraid her sons will hear about this shame."
"I went to the supermarket and told them about the case. I found out where the grandmother lives and I went and found her. She's curled up in a blanket and not talking. I lied to her that I was a lawyer and that I was here to save her, and I'm ashamed to say it. I told her I would do anything to get the supermarket to drop the lawsuit. But unfortunately, I don't have the money to pay her a lawyer either."
Regarding the grandmother's family, the neighbor said she has two sons. "One is unemployed, the other has four children and gets 950 euros and has a big loan." According to the neighbour, the woman gets a 10,000 euro pension per year and has to pay a 4,500 euro loan and another 4,000 because she has a health problem and is undergoing treatment that comes from America so that she can walk.
"We have her on sedatives. She told me in tears that a month ago she sent a letter to a big football agent asking for help because she had once worked for the team."
