Former Danish Defence Minister Klaus Jort Frederiksen said today that he has been charged with violating an article of the Criminal Code that mentions treason for leaking state secrets.

The charges against Frederiksen, who served as defense minister from 2016 to 2019, were based on the rarely used Article 109 of the code, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison, though it has been unclear exactly what the charges are.

Article 109 covers any "person who discloses or transmits any information about secret negotiations, discussions or decisions of the state or its rights in relation to foreign states."

A statement released today by Frederiksen did not specify what the charges against him were or whether the charges related to his time as a minister.

"I have spoken as a member of parliament on a political matter and I have nothing more to add at this time. But I would never have imagined that I could have done anything that could have harmed Denmark or Danish interests," Frederiksen said in a statement.

It was not clear what comments Frederiksen was referring to in his statement.

The prosecutor's office and the Defense Ministry declined to comment on Frederiksen's statement.

The news comes after the head of Denmark's foreign intelligence unit was arrested last month, charged under the same article of the Criminal Code for his suspected involvement in a case of leaking "top secret" information. Lars Finchen denies any wrongdoing, describing the charge as "completely absurd."
