These developments are regrettable and contrary to international legality. These are military operations within Europe, something we have avoided since the end of the Second World War.
According to the picture we have so far, we condemn the military invasion against a country that is independent, sovereign and territorially intact.
The President of the Republic is making arrangements to be in Brussels by this evening for a joint and united response to the evolving situation. By then there will be a clear picture of Russia's intentions.
Of course the EU will not respond militarily but by imposing sanctions. We have to be prepared because sanctions may have an impact on all Member States including Cyprus. I reiterate that decisions will be taken in a spirit of unity, which is the most powerful weapon we have.
We call even now for a ceasefire to avoid civilian casualties and a return to diplomatic channels.
With regard to Cypriots in Ukraine, the Crisis Management Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been activated and is available for consular assistance and possible implementation of evacuation plans.
