In relation to comments and public statements that raise the issue of the creation of a School of the University of Cyprus in Larnaca, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr Prodromos Prodromou, clarifies the following:

The Government has in no way abandoned the original plan or the intention to proceed, in accordance with the announcement of the President of the Republic, to the creation of a School of the University of Cyprus in Larnaca.

As the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture was informed at its meeting on 10/4/2019, and subsequently the Mayor and other authorities and bodies of Larnaca, in a meeting with the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, on 10/7/2020, A problem in the implementation of this project has been created since the University of Cyprus changed the original cost estimate of the project and from 25 million euros (55 million euros cost with a revenue estimate of 30 million euros over 10 years) submitted a new cost estimate of more than 100 million euros (with a revenue estimate of 3.5 million euros over 10 years).

Moreover, an additional reason why the implementation of the project could not proceed so far is the abandonment of the original site where the School was planned to be built and to which the President of the Republic's announcement referred - after consultations - as well.

The Government is always ready to implement the original plan, provided that the University of Cyprus agrees and accepts to proceed with the establishment of the School on the basis of the original estimate given and the Municipality of Larnaca can make the arrangements for the site, as were the original assurances given to the President of the Republic.
