The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, met with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Mr Najib Mikati, this afternoon in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he travelled today to participate in the COP27 Summit on Climate Change, which will take place on 7 and 8 November.

The President's meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon took place in the presence of the Minister of Energy Ms. Natasha Pilidi, the Government Spokesperson Mr. During the meeting, which was held in an extremely friendly atmosphere, the excellent relations between the two countries were discussed, which, as was noted by both sides, can be upgraded, creating multiple benefits for both countries.

One of the most important issues raised during the meeting was the updating of the agreement between the two countries on the delimitation of the EEZ. Cooperation between the two countries on the issue of the exploitation of their natural resources and the potential in this area as a result of the agreement, including natural gas and renewable energy sources, was also discussed.

The possibility of an electrical interconnection between the two countries was also discussed.

For his part, the President of the Republic assured Prime Minister Mikati that Cyprus will take an initiative within the EU in order to provide better financial support to Lebanon to deal with the increasing migratory flows, a problem that Cyprus is also facing due to Turkey's instrumentalisation of the migration issue.

The President of the Republic briefed the Lebanese Prime Minister on the current situation in the Cyprus problem, while the situation in Lebanon was also discussed.

The Lebanese Prime Minister reiterated his country's long-standing support for the Cyprus problem on the basis of principles and values.

Finally, he expressed his thanks for the agreement reached between the two countries on the issue of mutual assistance in fighting fires.

Tomorrow, the President of the Republic will participate in the COP27 Summit, where a total of 120 heads of state and government are expected to take part, while an event on Cyprus' initiative to tackle climate change, which will be presented by the President of the Republic, will be held on the sidelines of the Summit.

It is noted that Cyprus has taken an initiative in recent years to strengthen coordination and regional cooperation among the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East in order to address more effectively the adverse effects of the climate crisis. Building on the excellent relations that Cyprus has developed with the countries of the region, the initiative involves, among other things, the development of a Regional Action Plan with the contribution of eminent scientists. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, while Heads of State or Government and other officials of foreign governments are expected to attend.

The Summit will lay the foundations for the implementation of the actions that have been decided and for the achievement of the objectives that have been set.

The President of the Republic is accompanied in Egypt by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Mr. Costas Kadis, the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Mrs. Natasha Pelidi, the Government Spokesman Mr. Marios Pelekanos, the Director of the Office of the President of the Republic Mr. Pantelis Pantelidis, the Deputy Government Spokesperson Mrs. Niovi Parisinou and officials.

The Cyprus Initiative Summit will also be attended and addressed by Dr. Kostas Papanicolas, Advisor to the President of the Republic on Climate Change issues.

President Anastasiades is also expected to have contacts with Heads of State and Government in the margins of the Summit.

Specifically, the President of the Republic will attend the opening ceremony of the Summit tomorrow, 7 November, at noon, while in the evening he will attend a reception hosted by the President of Egypt in honour of the leaders of the states and governments participating in the Summit.

On Tuesday, 8 November, at 10 a.m, The President of the Republic will attend and address the event on the Cyprus initiative at the venue of COP27.

Subsequently, President Anastasiades will have a meeting with the President of Armenia, Mr. Vahan Khatsiatourian, during which a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of environmental protection will be signed by the respective Ministers of the two countries in the presence of the two Presidents.

Subsequently, the President of the Republic will intervene at the COP27 Summit.
