AKEL, through today's statements by its General Secretary, is beginning to understand, at least in part, the realities that have led to the global price increase.
We welcome the fact that the General Secretary of AKEL also recognises that "there is potential and room" for us as a state to be able to provide solutions. Margins and possibilities exist due to the policies implemented by the government of Nicos Anastasiades since 2013, resulting in the strengthening of our economy. Our economy is now in a position to be able to cope with extraordinary crises, such as that of the coronavirus pandemic or the current one, which inevitably have consequences, without the risk of collapse.
The Government has actively demonstrated that it intervenes with targeted measures aimed at providing solutions without jeopardising economic stability, with a view to the present and the future, so that we are never again led to the kind of social groceries to which we will be subjected by slogan policies that do not take into account the economic potential of the State.
The Government, taking into account the new data arising from the developments in Ukraine, is studying, in cooperation with the competent EU institutions, additional measures that will limit the expected consequences. Measures that will bring about even more tangible results if implemented by a significant number of European countries.
AKEL, if it really wants to contribute, instead of organising protest marches about an admittedly global phenomenon, should finally propose measures that will get to the root of the problems. Measures that go beyond the subsidy policy it has pursued during its years in power, with the well-known tragic results.
