From his first day in office, the President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides' first and foremost priority has been the effort to break the deadlock, to resume negotiations from the point where they have been interrupted and to find a final solution to the Cyprus problem, always within the framework agreed by the United Nations (UN) Security Council for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
Our initiatives in all directions were and are aimed at creating a positive climate and reviving the process.
The appointment of Ms. Holguín as Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General (SG) for the Cyprus problem was also the result of these initiatives, an important development that once again verified the undiminished interest of the SG himself personally in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.
Ms Holguín's efforts from the very first moment of receiving her terms of reference, her commitment, as well as her knowledge and experience of similar processes, added to the joint effort to break the deadlock.
Ms. Holguín's open letter, a few days before the delivery of her report to the UN Secretary General, sends an encouraging message, that of her strong will to continue her efforts and her confidence in a final settlement of the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework.
We share with Ms. Holguín and the United Nations (UN) Secretary General the same vision for a final settlement, making Cyprus a regional area of peace, security and prosperity.
Ms Holguín's willingness to seek the approach to be followed in order to resume negotiations within the UN framework is tangible proof of her perseverance and the perspective she wishes to create.
We reiterate once again our readiness to continue to contribute positively to the efforts of Ms. Holguín and the UN Secretary General to implement the UN Security Council resolutions for the benefit of our country and future generations.
