The cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Lebanon for the effective management of the migration issue was discussed during today's meeting between President Nicos Christodoulides and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
President Christodoulides, who visited Beirut today, had a private meeting and extended talks with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, followed by a meeting with the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Mr. Nabih Berri.
During the talks with the Lebanese Prime Minister, it was noted that the problem of migration is a common one and that it must be addressed through coordinated actions.
A very good discussion took place, during which it was agreed that the two countries should cooperate with the substantial assistance of the European Commission.
For his part, President Christodoulides referred to the ongoing discussions at European Union (EU) level on this issue, noting that the implementation of the EU's intentions also depends on the results of the actions taken by both sides to address the issue of migration and the increased flows to Cyprus.
The Lebanese leadership acknowledged the urgent need and committed to intensify surveillance efforts to detect illegal trafficking rings.
It was also agreed that there should be mutual focus on the implementation of what has been agreed during today's talks, as well as coordination between Cyprus-Lebanon-European Commission, as well as on the undertaking of actions between Lebanon and the EU.
