The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides participated this afternoon in a teleconference in preparation for the European Council which will take place on 14 and 15 December in Brussels. The teleconference was convened by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and was attended by the Prime Ministers of Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Slovakia and Luxembourg.
The teleconference discussed issues on the agenda of the European Council such as developments in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, the migration issue, the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework, the debate on the Strategic Agenda and the enlargement of the European Union.
In his intervention during the teleconference, President Christodoulides, referring to the situation in the Middle East, underlined the need to relaunch the peace process and de-escalate the crisis, as well as the active role that the European Union should play.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus referred to the urgent need to provide humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza and to the contacts being made by the Republic of Cyprus in the context of the implementation of the initiative for the creation of a maritime corridor for the provision of humanitarian aid from Cyprus to Gaza.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus expressed the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus in relation to the discussion on EU enlargement in accordance with the European Commission's recommendations on Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, always keeping in mind that enlargement will continue to be a merit-based process, accompanied by specific conditions and conditionalities.
Finally, in relation to the discussion on the Multiannual Financial Framework, President Christodoulides underlined the need for additional funding for the management of migration, both in the internal and external dimension.
