The Government of Cyprus confirms that a meeting has been reached with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force for Pyla and the area north of it (Platis site). The understanding was reached after intensive and thorough consultations between the Republic of Cyprus and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force by Mr. Tasos Tzionis, National Security Advisor and Mr. Colin Stewart, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

The understanding includes provisions which:

Address the concerns of the Republic of Cyprus regarding the status of the buffer zone, which is safeguarded;

Restore order in the specific area of the buffer zone.

Provide for the urban and residential development of the area as desired by the residents, for the benefit of all the residents of Pyla, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Create conditions for peaceful and creative coexistence of the residents at a time when the resumption of talks towards a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem is sought.

The Cyprus Government has, throughout this period, been in constant contact with the organised community of Pyla, which it thanks in particular for its constructive contribution during the consultations.

The Cyprus Government will work with sincere political will to implement the provisions of the understanding. At the same time, the President of the Republic remains committed to efforts to resume negotiations from where they have been interrupted with a view to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of United Nations Security Council resolutions and the principles and values of the European Union.
