Twenty years since the Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union (EU) on May 1, 2004, our country has been walking in the modern international environment stronger, having at the same time achieved significant achievements for the daily life and quality of life of its citizens, based on the principles and values that govern the European construction.
Our accession to the great European family is a great success for the Republic of Cyprus and an extremely important milestone in the modern history of our country. On 1 May 2004, Cyprus, together with nine other states, became an equal, full and integral member of a powerful group of states, creating a network of natural allies. A group of states with which we share common values and principles, upholding democracy, equality, the rule of law, pluralism, dialogue, equal and effective representation. Thus, Cyprus effectively faces challenges in all areas and is present in the fields where co-creation and promotion of policies for the benefit of citizens is achieved.
The process of harmonisation of the Republic of Cyprus with the European acquis and its membership of the European Union has further strengthened the foundations of the rule of law, while the participation of Cyprus in the euro area since 2008 is a fundamental development for the Cypriot economy.
Cyprus has already started to prepare itself for taking over, for the second time, as a member of the European Union. Thus it is further strengthening, through the important task it will undertake, its presence at the European level as a reliable and beneficial partner, with a positive impact on the great European edifice.
