[PIO] Written reply of the Government Spokesman Mr. Constantinos Letibiotis to DISY

The Cyprus problem, as our supreme national issue, is neither suitable for communication manipulations nor as a vehicle for political maneuvers. The DISY leadership, unfortunately, fails to grasp the criticality of the moment and the mission of the National Council.

The recent statement of the DISY Press Spokesman attempts to distract from the real political failure, or - even worse - fails to grasp it.

We note with great surprise both through the letter of the President of DISY and through the recent statement, unfortunately, the adoption of undocumented arguments put forward by the other side so far. Those who reinforce Turkey's arguments are therefore well advised to reflect on whether it is worthwhile to harm national aspirations on the altar of other expediencies.

The timing of the publication of Mrs Demetriou's letter is absolutely intertwined with the essence of the debate, but also with the messages it sends. A few hours before the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) was to deliver her report to the UN Secretary-General, the President of DISY (President of the Republic at the time) chose to prejudge and apportion blame.

If they fail to understand the inappropriate and politically unorthodox nature of this choice, it is indeed surprising. The fact that the President of DISY chose to make the letter public while the President of the Republic was absent abroad, before he was even given the opportunity to read it, demonstrates both the degree of respect and the willingness to cooperate that such an action projects.

As for the content of the letter, which will certainly be answered in detail by the President of the Republic, we must note that the mission of the National Council is the necessary exchange of views between the political leadership of the country and not merely to inform the President of the Republic. We have read in the letter views that have not at any point been put before the National Council, not even during the previous period.

From the very first moment of taking office, President Christodoulides has taken and is taking initiatives, initiatives that are recognised internationally, but which also contribute positively to the creation of a positive climate. It is, after all, the taking of such initiatives on our part that made possible the appointment of Ms. Olgin, about whose efforts the DISY leadership is so concerned.

We are fully aware of the historicity of the moment and the responsibility that weighs on us. We await an update in relation to the meeting of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General with the UN Secretary General, as well as on the contacts of the Greek Prime Minister. Instead of communication manipulations, we would like all of us to be concerned with the important developments and the responsible attitude they require.
