[PIO] Written reply by the Government Spokesman Mr Constantinos Letibiotis to AKEL on references to the Cyprus-US agreement

It is regrettable that the AKEL leadership takes as submission the recognition of our country internationally and the fact that countries, such as the US, recognise us as a stable partner and pillar of security, cooperation and peace in our wider region.

The one-dimensional perception of AKEL's foreign policy, unfortunately, remains obsessively unchanged. Our country is emerging as a strategic partner of the USA with the prospects created being obvious in vital sectors such as energy, research and technology, as well as security, while the prospects created for investment in our country and for strengthening our trade relations with a country such as the USA are also important for the Cypriot economy.

Unfortunately, some remain adherents of a foreign policy that prioritised the opening of embassies on the basis of ideological criteria.

The Cyprus we envision is a country that is emerging and establishing itself internationally, a modern state that is increasing its diplomatic footprint and that, despite ongoing challenges, is progressing and growing.
