This year again on 1 March we commemorate World Civil Defence Day, which was established in 1990, on the initiative of the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO), the day on which the ICDO's statutes came into force.

Civil defence as a system refers to a set of measures and actions taken proactively or during or afterwards in order to prevent or adequately address/manage the consequences of a disaster/disaster.

In parallel with the World Civil Defence Day, all Forces and Services, which are institutionally integrated in the civil defence system and primarily the Civil Defence Force, we honour the pioneers of the organisation and operation of both the system and the Force, as well as those who have sacrificed themselves from time to time on the altar of duty.

World Civil Defence Day, especially this year, coincides with a very difficult period, due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and Israel where the importance of the civil defence system, both locally and globally, is even more highlighted.

This year is symbolic for Cyprus Civil Defence, as it marks 60 years since its foundation. To celebrate the 60th anniversary, various events will be held, through which citizens will be informed about the role, action and importance of the Civil Defence system.

Special mention and due honor is made to the tireless, silent workers of the system, the volunteers of the Civil Defence Force, who in every response and action demonstrate their incessant and pure voluntary sacrifice, but also to the amynites and amynitres who have served these 60 years of Civil Defence and who have contributed and continue to contribute to increasing the resilience of society to possible natural or man-made hazards.
