[PIO] Workshop on "Green Infrastructure and Energy Upgrading of Buildings" organised by the Office of the Environment Commissioner with CSR Cyprus

The workshop "Green Infrastructure and Energy Upgrading of Buildings" was held today at the Multipurpose Multipurpose Social Welfare and Employment Centre of Larnaca Municipality, co-organized by the Office of the Environment Commissioner and the Cyprus Network for Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility-CSR Cyprus with the support of the Municipality of Larnaca.

This workshop is the fourth in a series of educational activities developed jointly between the Environment Commissioner's Office and CSR Cyprus, aiming at developing green skills and promoting sustainable development principles to Cypriot business executives

In her address to the workshop, Environment Commissioner Theodosiou said that "the promotion of energy efficiency and the development of relevant innovative solutions contribute to our broader environmental goals, but also form part of the She added that "these actions will make an important contribution to mitigating climate change, as well as to accelerating the pace of achieving the climate neutrality target for the EU as a whole by 2050 on the one hand, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 on the other". Concluding her address, Ms Theodosiou said that "despite the challenges, the transition to climate neutrality also offers significant opportunities for economic growth, markets and jobs, technological development, boosting green and environmentally friendly entrepreneurship".

The Vice President of the Board of Directors of CSR Cyprus, Ms. Sotiroula Sotiriou, welcoming the proceedings of the workshop, stated that "all of us, either as citizens or as professionals and representatives of organizations, are experiencing the stormy consequences of the environmental crisis and we must reduce, to the extent of our share, the impact of our activities, acting both individually and collectively". Ms Sotiriou noted that CSR, as the preeminent national network for Sustainability and Responsible Business, remains "next to the businesses of our country, regardless of their size, transferring know-how and information, with a view to shaping a better tomorrow for all of us", qualifying "the importance of education, awareness-raising and taking actions that contribute to a greener and more sustainable tomorrow".

During the workshop, which was attended by individuals and businesses from various sectors, speakers specialized in the field of energy, energy technologies and the environment were invited and attended.

Presentations were made in turn by Dr Andreas Tzirkallis and Dr Nestoras Antoniou from the University of Cyprus (Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme: Energy Technologies and Sustainable Design, Mr. Mr. Yannis Kanaris, Officer in the Energy and Environment Department at the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB) and Mr. Andreas Lizidis, Senior Industrial Applications Officer at the Energy Service.

The first part of the workshop was moderated by the Communications and Development Officer of CSR Cyprus Mrs. Maria Mina.

The main topics of the workshop were energy technologies and sustainable building design, the advantages (and barriers) of energy efficiency, the energy upgrade of school buildings, energy upgrade and good practices in the hotel sector as well as sponsorship projects for energy upgrade of buildings.

The workshop concluded with a discussion between the speakers and the participants on the topics presented. The discussion was moderated by Ms Marilena Papastavrou, Environment Officer of the Office of the Environment Commissioner.
