[PIO] Working Visit of the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade to Cyprus

Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó paid a working visit to Cyprus today, at the invitation of Foreign Minister Constantinos Kobou.

During the visit, the two Ministers had a private meeting, followed by extended consultations with the participation of delegations of the two Ministries. The discussions focused on bilateral relations between Cyprus and Hungary, the Cyprus problem, the upcoming Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the second half of 2024, as well as on current international issues, focusing on the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine.

After the consultations, the two Ministers made statements to the media. Afterwards, they went to the building of the Embassy of Hungary in Nicosia, where an inauguration ceremony of the Embassy was held. During the ceremony, the Foreign Minister expressed the Government's appreciation for the Hungarian Government's decision to reopen the Embassy in Nicosia, following the decision of the Cypriot Government to reopen the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Budapest. At the same time, speaking in the presence of Hungarian members of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP) in Cyprus, Mr. Kobos stressed that Hungary has been a constant friend of Cyprus in a tangible and visible way through its contribution to UNFICYP.

In the morning, Mr. Szijjártó was received by the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides.
