[PIO] Working Visit of the Deputy Minister of Culture in Athens

Deputy Minister of State for Culture Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou paid a working visit to Athens, from 30 August to 1 September 2023. She met with the Minister of Culture and Sports of Greece, Ms. Lina Mendoni, and had a series of contacts at important cultural institutions.

During their meeting, the Deputy Minister of Culture of Cyprus and the Minister of Culture and Sports of Greece discussed issues of bilateral, regional and international cultural cooperation. In particular, they discussed the issue of illicit trafficking of cultural goods, issues of wider cultural heritage, as well as issues of contemporary culture. They agreed on cooperation and actions for the exchange of know-how, expertise and best practices in various fields of culture, conservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister visited the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum, where they discussed issues related to the operation and management of archaeological museums and collections and related challenges.

During Dr. Kassianidou's visit to the National Library of Greece, methods and necessary infrastructure for the collection, organization and preservation of intellectual production and how to ensure free access to the general public were discussed. There was also an exchange of views in view of the plans for the reorganization and promotion of the Cyprus Library.

At the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Deputy Minister and the Management of the Museum discussed the issue of the Cypriot collections and the way of managing the issues referred to in the agreements concluded for the concession of the collections.

During the visits of the Deputy Minister to the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Gallery, best practices for the promotion and support of contemporary cultural production and the promotion of artistic education to the general public were discussed.

The working visit of the Deputy Minister of Culture to Athens was particularly productive and the signing of an updated Memorandum of Cultural Cooperation between Cyprus and Greece will be launched in the near future, reflecting the upgraded level of cooperation and objectives set during the visit.
