The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement of the 9 Member States of the European Union (MED9), hosted a working dinner for the Ministers of the Mediterranean Member States, prior to the opening of the Agriculture Council in Brussels. The aim was to identify and find tools to promote common positions that will strengthen their demands on agricultural issues.

During the meeting, Dr Panagiotou stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination of the Mediterranean countries before the Councils, especially in this particularly critical period for agriculture. Last night's MED9 working dinner provided the opportunity to present and promote common positions which, among others, include:

  1. Providing increased flexibility to farmers and National Authorities in order to reduce the administrative burden and improve the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP);
  2. Supporting the European Commission's intention to establish an observatory on production costs, profit margins and commercial practices for the benefit of farmers.
  3. Joint action to strengthen the position of farmers in the agri-food chain.
  4. Call for additional measures and funding opportunities to address the challenges in agriculture.
  5. Strengthen actions on water management, resilience and water efficiency in agriculture.
  6. Satisfy the Commission's proposal to amend the CAP Regulations and finalise them by April 2024.

Dr Panagiotou informed her counterparts that the Cyprus MED9 Presidency, in the field of agriculture, will continue its initiative with the ultimate goal of strengthening European farmers and safeguarding the EU's food security.
