In the context of International Women's Day, the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr.Yannis Panayiotou, together with the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms.Josie Christodoulou, met with the female employees of the Ministry and discussed the importance of today's day, stressing that equality goes through work.
In his message, the Minister said that Women's Day is every day when women fight for truly equal and meritocratic treatment.
He noted: "As the Ministry of Labour, we will not condone any discrimination and will fight with the institutions and means at our disposal to combat it. Focusing on President Christodoulides' people-centred governance programme, we continue to plan and implement measures to improve the position of women in Cypriot society and economy and gender equality. We are planning interventions in actions that will enhance wage transparency, which have also been included in the National Strategy for Gender Equality 2024 - 2026."
In addition, he highlighted the recent increase in the duration of leave and payment of maternity allowance to 5 ½ months, a measure that further supports working mothers.
In conclusion, Panagiotou said: "Our goal is to strengthen in every way the presence of women in all sectors, because we trust you and because you are indispensable. There is much that we must do for all of you in order to repay what we owe you."
For her part, Ms. Christodoulou said that today we honor and remember the struggles that thousands of women have made over the years for the right to vote, economic independence, professional advancement and the securing of our rights to establish gender equality. We are creating the right conditions to ensure a gender-sensitive environment so that every woman can reach her full potential, free from stereotypes and prejudices.
