The Department of Antiquities of the Deputy Ministry of Culture announces the art installation We Met - Love, Death and Meta, in the Periodic Exhibition Hall of the Cyprus Museum.

The installation, which will be open to the public from 31 May to 31 October 2024, focuses on three fundamental existential conditions that have been of concern to human creation and intellect throughout time, and invites us to reflect on their fulfillment within the present temporality. The virtual reality (VR) project, which is a central element of the installation, was created with the contribution of Immersive Technologies for Intelligent and Creative Applications (ITICA), the CYENS Centre of Excellence.

Antiquities from the collections of the Department of Antiquities symbiose with contemporary works by the artist Michalis Charalambous in a timeless and labyrinthine environment with a semiotics aesthetically accessible to new generations. Clay, metal, stone, glass, prints, polymer materials and algorithmic entities are combined in a hybrid visual universe, where love and death are successive transitions in the immersive journey of (META)man towards the afterlife of virtual reality.

The space that defines this digital META universe is offered for reflection and redefinition. Is the sense of touch transcribed in virtual reality? How is the mourning of (dis)separation experienced in the META universe? Is the fragrance encoded in digital flowers? How are associations developed with those around us, with the environment and its elements, which make sense of our existence within the virtual universe? Can there be intimacy in a space of virtual reality? Are our avatars capable of falling in love and dying in an environment that abolishes the concepts of decay and mortality? We are invited to enter this world, to wander and renegotiate the substance of the experiences that define us in a fluid and uncertain reality.
