Road safety issues and ways of further cooperation between the Ministry of Transport and the Ministries of Defence and Education to promote good behaviour on the road network among young people were the focus of separate meetings held in recent days by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Yannis Karousosos and the Minister of Defence Mr. Charalambos Petridis and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Mr. Prodromos Prodromou. On behalf of the Minister of Justice and Public Order, the meeting was attended by the Director General of the Ministry. Also present were the Director General of the Ministry of Transport, the Assistant Director of Traffic, on behalf of the Chief of Police, as well as the members of the Road Safety Council.

Safe transport of National Guardsmen, training and education in the camps

Recommendations for the implementation of actions concerning, inter alia, the safe transport of National Guardsmen to the camps and the introduction of training programmes within the camps will be considered in the coming period by a working group set up with the participation of officials from the Ministries of Transport, Justice and Defence.

Considering that National Guardsmen, as young drivers, are often more prone to road collisions, Messrs. Karousos and Petridis appointed the working group, which, after studying the proposals submitted, will forward them to the next meeting of the Road Safety Council in March for final decisions and implementation.

During their meeting, the Ministers of Transport and Defence assessed the actions already implemented in the camps for the information and training of soldiers and National Guardsmen, in cooperation with the National Guard and the Police.

Cultivating road culture in schools through training programmes

At their meeting, the Ministers of Transport and Education examined the actions already implemented in schools to raise awareness of road safety issues among pupils. The two Ministers agreed to promote, in cooperation with the Road Safety Council, programmes to enhance the awareness of pupils, with the ultimate aim of fostering a culture of correct behaviour on the road network.

Also on the agenda was the way of obtaining a student driving licence, and it was decided to study extensively the proposal to change the existing procedure. In particular, Mr Karousos and Mr Prodromou asked the competent officials to work out the possible completion of a training programme in schools as a prerequisite for obtaining a learner's licence.
